Deputy Superintendent of Police, Prohibition Enforcement Wing, Mayiladuthurai, M. Sundaresan on Saturday said he faced a threat to his life and sought protection. He alleged he was being harassed by senior officials for serving with honesty.

Speaking to reporters here, Mr. Sundaresan said he was under immense mental stress and claimed that efforts were being made to malign his reputation through the circulation of past allegations in the media. “If those charges from years ago were true, why wasn’t I suspended then? In my 30 years of service, I’ve never once faced suspension. That speaks of my record,” he said.

The controversy began on Thursday when Mr. Sundaresan was seen walking from his home to his office, allegedly after his official vehicle was withdrawn. While the incident triggered speculation, the district police administration denied the claim. Soon, a disciplinary report alleging misconduct during his tenure as an Inspector between 2005 and 2008 surfaced in sections of the media.

“I fear for my life. The government must provide protection. If I’m guilty, punish me. But conduct an inquiry first. I urge the National Human Rights Commission to take suo motu cognisance and request the Chief Minister to intervene and ensure justice.” he said.
