A flood alert has been issued by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board as the twin lakes of Himayatsagar and Osmansagar are nearing the full tank level (FTL).

“Due to significant inflows during the current monsoon, the water levels in Himayathsagar and Osmansagar reservoirs are approaching their FTL. There is a high probability of opening the flood gates of Himayathsagar Reservoir depending on further rainfall in the catchment area,” says the media release by the civic body that manages the water supply to the city.

While the Himayathsagar with a bigger catchment area is receiving inflows of 500 cusecs, the Osmansagar is receiving 50 cusecs. The flood alert is aimed at the population that lives on the river bank of the Musi.

“It is hereby requested to activate flood SOPs, alert downstream populations along the Musi river, and take all necessary precautions to protect life and property. Please remain on high alert and monitor communications for further updates. This notice is issued to ensure timely preparedness for a potential flood gate opening,” says the flood alert.
