SDM Narayana Heart Centre in Dharwad, in Karnataka, has successfully performed an advanced procedure to cure 10 patients who were suffering from life-threatening clots in the veins.
Addressing press persons in Dharwad on November 19, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon Dr. Basavarajendra Anurshetru said that they treated deep vein thrombosis (DVT) through Percutaneous Endovascular Aspiration Thrombectomy procedure.
Through the procedure, life-threatening clots from major veins, including the iliac veins and inferior vena cava (IVC), were successfully cleared, thus restoring blood flow and preventing potentially fatal complications , he said.
Dr. Anurshetru said that six women aged between 32 and 67 years from Gadag, Koppal, Hubballi and Dharwad and four male patients aged between 28 and 63 from Gadag and Bagalkot were brought in with sudden, painful swelling in their legs. Timely intervention saved them all, he said adding that, left untreated, the condition could lead to pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening complication that could happen if clots travel to the lungs.
Dr Anurshetru led all 10 procedures using the Mechanical aspiration thrombectomy method, a cutting-edge catheter-based technology that allows safe removal of blood clots. These 10 cases highlight the importance of awareness and timely treatment. All the 10 patients were discharged from the hospital within two days.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Kirti P.LÂ said that, through the procedure, the hospital had provided life-saving care to patients of the region, who otherwise would be forced to travel to bigger cities for the specialised treatment.
