District Collector R. Sukumar on Thursday launched the 100-day-long district-wide awareness campaign against child marriage and the need for providing uninterrupted education to girls at least up to graduation.

After administering the anti-child marriage pledge to the staff of the District Collectorate, Dr. Sukumar said the campaign would be conducted across the district from November 27 to March 8 next year to tell the public about the need for ensuring proper education to the girls at least up to graduation, providing them better hygiene, nutritious food, safe environment etc. while strictly avoiding child marriage. The public should inform the government officials or police about the arrangements being made secretively for conducting child marriage.

“Since conducting child marriage will seriously harm the girl’s education, personality and health, the parents should strictly avoid it. Else, they will be booked and prosecuted. Moreover, the girl children should be educated on personal hygiene and the need for taking nutritious food,” Dr. Sukumar said.

The awareness campaign will also educate the public on curbing crime against women and the children.

District Revenue Officer M. Durai, Revenue Divisional Officer, Tirunelveli, Priya, Chief Educational Officer Sivakumar, District Social Welfare Officer Thajunnisa Begum and others were present.
