A four-member team from the Centre, headed by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary Pausumi Basu, visited Prakasam district on Monday to assess the damage caused by the recent Cyclone Montha.
The team includes Finance Commission Division (FCD) Deputy Director Mahesh Kumar, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Vijayawada, Executive Engineer Shashank Shekhar Rai, and ISRO, Hyderabad, National Remote Sensing Centre Scientist ‘E’ Sai Bhagirath.
District Collector P. Raja Babu explained to them about the damage caused by the cyclone through a photo exhibition/video presentation at the Collectorate in Ongole. Santhanuthalapadu MLA B.N. Vijay Kumar and Agriculture Mission Vice-Chairman Mareddy Srinivas Reddy also were present.
The team was informed that the damage was most severe in the western part of the district and cotton was the most affected crop. Cotton suffered damaged in 8,313 hectares, paddy in 1,557 hectares, vegetables in 1,388 hectares, and maize in 1,260 hectares respectively.
In addition to these, 26 hectares of black gram, 17 hectares of groundnut and 89 hectares of red gram crops were damaged. In total, 12,570 hectares of various crops were damaged in the district, the Collector told the team.
Later, the team toured the cyclone-affected areas and interacted with the farmers as well as district officials. They inspected the flooded paddy fields in Allur, NG Padu and Ommevaram villages, as well as the affected fish ponds in Koppolu and Allur villages.
