A 14-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after being struck by flying stones during a firing practice session by Armed Forces Special Operations Division personnel near Veeramalai, close to Vaiyampatti, police said on Friday.
According to official sources, firing practice is being carried out by HQ AFSOD trainees up to November 8, and by the Madras Engineering Group and Centre unit from November 10 to 22 at the designated range in Veeramalaipalayam, Aniyapur village, under Manapparai taluk. The sessions are scheduled from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., and again from 7.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m.
Police said that during Friday’s session, some stones ricocheted inside the forested area of Veeramalai and struck the boy, identified as P. Sanjay, a resident of the locality. The boy, a Class IX student at the local government high school, had entered the forest in search of his pet goat when the incident occurred. He sustained a minor head injury and was admitted to Tiruchi Government Hospital for treatment.
Police sources said no case had been filed so far, as the injury was minor and public announcements had been made in nearby villages in advance, warning residents to avoid the training area.
