In this year so far, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Chennai Central successfully retrieved 1769 luggage items valued at ₹ 79,57,509, which had been left behind by passengers. The retrieved belongings include 78 mobile phones, seven laptops, jewelry worth ₹ 17.10 lakh and various other valuable articles.
The RPF said, many of these items were recovered during post-arrival checks of trains at the Chennai Central Railway Station, while several others were traced and retrieved through vigilant monitoring using CCTV surveillance. Recovered luggage items were safely handed over to the rightful owners after due authentication.
Under the guidance of Arul Jothi, Inspector General, Railway Protection Force, Southern Railway, intensive awareness campaigns on theft prevention and passenger safety are being conducted at Chennai Central. These campaigns aim to educate passengers on safeguarding their belongings and preventing theft or loss during travel, the RPF said in a press release.
Passengers are advised to keep their luggage securely at all times, remain vigilant, and ensure they check all their belongings while boarding and deboarding trains to avoid leftover/ theft.
