As many as 18 Bangladeshi nationals arrested for staying without valid documents near Perundurai were sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment by the Erode Principal District Court on Wednesday (December 3, 2025).
In the first case, the Perundurai police had, on February 15, 2025, arrested 11 Bangladeshis from Kuppaikadu in Panickampalayam, Perundurai, for staying without valid documents. In the second case, police arrested seven persons from Ellai Medu Pirivu in Perundurai on April 23, 2025, for illegal stay. Cases were registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Foreigners Act, and they were lodged at Puzhal Prison, and the Tiruchi and Attur camps.
Both cases were later transferred to the Principal District Court. Principal District Judge S. Sameena convicted all 18 and also imposed a total fine of ₹1.96 lakh.
As per legal provisions, foreigners convicted under such offences must be repatriated to their home countries to serve the remainder of their sentence. Accordingly, the judge ordered that, after adjusting the period already spent in custody, the convicts be sent to Bangladesh to undergo the remaining term. Public Prosecutor M. Arutchelvan appeared for the prosecution.
