The Congress National High Command has decided to constitute a committee to hold talks with the DMK regarding the 2026 Assembly election. An official announcement on this is expected to be made soon.

According to sources in Delhi, the move is intended to put to rest speculation that the Congress may join hands with the fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, headed by actor-politician Vijay.

Earlier on Thursday evening, TNCC president Selvaperunthagai, speaking at a meeting in Chennai, said the INDIA bloc (comprising the DMK, Congress, and other parties) remained strong and no one could drive a wedge into the alliance.

“There have been some rumblings over the past two months. What will the future of the alliance be, and in which direction will it move? Many people have tried to take advantage of the speculation. In a few hours, there will be an announcement that will put an end to it,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister and DMK youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also attended the event, remarked that when he entered the venue with School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and noticed that Mr. Selvaperunthagai was not present, it immediately triggered speculation about the alliance. “Our friends in the media are ready with a headline ‘Udhayanidhi upset; Selvaperunthagai absent’,” he quipped.

However, Mr. Selvaperunthagai had briefly left the venue due to a prior appointment and later returned to participate in the event. “Both Mr. Selvaperunthagai and his party will return at the appropriate time. However, the question of a return arises only when they have left,” Mr. Udhayanidhi said.
