More than 20 passengers suffered simple or multiple injuries when a private omni bus toppled near Thadicombu in the district on Saturday.
Police said the private bus, bound for Bangalore from Cumbum, was approaching Thadicombu police station in Dindigul district limits around 2.30 a.m., when it toppled. Under the impact, 23 passengers, who were fast asleep, suffered injuries.
On information, police rushed to the spot. Fire and Rescue Services personnel brought the passengers consisting of 11 men, 11 women and a child out of the bus. Ambulances rushed them to Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital.
Doctors said that 17 among the injured, including the child, were treated and discharged as out-patients, while the remaining were admitted to the hospital for treatment. They might have suffered fractures and the exact nature of their injuries would be known only after receiving the scan reports, they added.
Police identified those under treatment as Swathi, 30, Sasiprabha, 36, Thangam, 35, Rekha, 27, Muthuselvam, 28, and Kumuda, 45. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the driver was in an inebriated mood and he was taken for medical examination.
A senior officer said that based on the medical report, further investigation would be conducted.
The bus toppled due to alleged rash and negligent driving and the driver ignored their warnings, the passengers said.
