The Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 552 motorists for drunk driving during a special enforcement drive carried out from November 28-29. The exercise was part of an ongoing push to curb late-night crashes and deter habitual offenders.
Among those caught, 438 were on two-wheelers, 45 were driving three-wheelers and 69 were at the wheel of cars or other vehicles. Police said the numbers reflected a familiar pattern in which two-wheeler riders form the bulk of offenders.
The breathalyser readings showed that 127 motorists registered between 30 and 50 mg, 212 between 51 and 100 mg, 112 between 101 and 150 mg, 64 between 151 and 200 mg, 19 between 201 and 250 mg, eight between 251 and 300 mg, and ten crossed the 300 mg mark. Officers described several of the higher readings as reckless to the point of absurdity, adding that such levels leave no room for excuses about just one drink.
Traffic police said that the city will continue to maintain zero tolerance towards drunk driving. Further checks will follow without prior notice. Motorists have been urged to cooperate with enforcement teams to avoid penalties and keep Hyderabad’s roads from turning into late-night obstacle courses.
