75 kg of suspected ganja seized, six held in Kochi

Seventy-five kg of suspected ganja has been seized by the police in Ernakulam district in two days in two separate incidents, the police said on Wednesday. Of this, 56 kg of the alleged contraband was seized by a joint team of the Railway Protection Force, Crime Prevention and Detection Squad and Government Railway Police at the Ernakulam Junction (South) railway station on Wednesday.

Three people were arrested after the substance was seized from onboard Tatanagar-Ernakulam Express. The arrested are Sukulal Tudu of West Bengal, a bedroll staff on the train, Deepak of Palakkad and Saroop of Vyttila in Kochi, the police said.

The seized item is valued at ₹28 lakh. The contraband was concealed in the cupboards of the train by Mr. Tudu, the police said. The other accused had reportedly come to collect the substance.

The three accused, slapped with sections under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, were remanded in judicial custody.

In another incident, three men from West Bengal’s Murshidabad were nabbed with 19 kg of suspected ganja by the Puthencruz police and the anti-narcotic squad of the Ernakulam Rural police on Tuesday. The arrested are Rahul Sirkar, 26, Muhammed Kaif, 21, and Rajamandal, 45.

The suspected ganja was trafficked from Murshidabad by train. The accused were taken into custody by the police when they were waiting to catch a bus at Mattappilly near Pankode. The police said the accused had procured the substance for ₹3,000 per kg from West Bengal and were planning to sell it for ₹30,000-₹ 35,000 a kg.
