The Madras Regimental Centre (MRC), Wellington, observed the 79th Infantry Day on Monday.

According to a press release, the event was held to commemorate the first landing of Indian Army Infantry at Srinagar airport on October 27, 1947. As part of the celebrations, a ‘Shaurya Veer Run’ was held on Sunday for school students from Wellington and Coonoor, along with personnel from the Wellington Station. The run aimed to encourage patriotism and a spirit of national service among children and youth.

A wreath-laying ceremony was organised at the MRC War Memorial to pay homage to soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Wreaths were laid by Brigadier S.K. Dutta, Brigadier General Staff (BGS), Defence Services Staff College. The ceremony was followed by the felicitation of six Veer Naris in honour of the sacrifices made by their husbands and sons.

A short film highlighting the camaraderie and spirit of the Armed Forces was screened at Roperia Auditorium for school students. A weapon and equipment display was organised at Shrinagesh Barracks, followed by a visit to the MRC Museum and Map Reading Nursery. The students and local youth were given an opportunity to view various military equipment and learn about the functioning of the Indian Army.
