The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council passed a resolution approving the operation and comprehensive maintenance of nine additional skid steer loaders (compact loaders). The new equipment is critical for solid waste management and other non-sanitation work, including garbage levelling at the Perungudi dump yard. The nine units were procured for ₹1.91 crore using funds from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, and the machines will be added to the GCC’s existing fleet of 51 loaders, the resolution read.
The Council also approved a three-year Operation and Maintenance (O&M) contract for this new machinery, often referred to as bobcats (compact loaders). The contract was awarded to private players for a total value of ₹3.08 crore, which includes ₹1,24,42,923 for operation and ₹1,84,29,868 for comprehensive maintenance. The Corporation said that the local staff do not have the technical skills to operate and maintain the advanced equipment, so GCC had to hire a private company.
Apart from this, the GCC council also passed resolution to appoint temporary sanitation workers for Chennai schools in all 15 zones.
