The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to complete the eco park at Raman Thangal lake in Sholinganallur, a project taken up under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from the Environmentalist Foundation of India worth ₹96.12 lakh.

According to GCC officials, 90% of the work has been completed. The lake, located along Model School Road Extension, covers 41.7 acres and has a storage capacity of 4,72,500 cubic metres. The installation of a sluice gate for the outlet drain was included in the project, to ensure flood mitigation, an official said.

The project involves the removal of water hyacinth and terrestrial weed species across the lake. Green spaces to attract diversity such as a butterfly garden, a flower garden and a bamboo garden will also be put up. It also includes creating a ‘fruit garden’ on a small piece of land in the lake also called ‘bird island’ where birds occasionally perch, official added.

The removal of water hyacinth was carried out as a separate activity in addition to the initial clearing works.

The GCC official stated that the remaining work would be completed soon.
