The Tiruppur police have arrested two persons from Karnataka and Maharashtra for reportedly conning a restaurant proprietor into buying fake jewellery amounting to ₹15 lakh.
According to Yashodha (51), who runs a restaurant at Oomapalayam near Mettupalayam, she had parted with the money to the duo who had purportedly offered to give away their jewellery for a low price in a situation of transacting distress sale supposedly to fund medical expenses of their relative.
Believing in the originality of the sample jewel which she had tested with a goldsmith, Yashoda had purchased the remaining jewellery from a location in Avinashi limits from the duo that had later turned out to be fake. The duo were not reachable by phone thereafter.
Based on her complaint lodged with the Avinashi police, an investigating team cornered Kansam (28) at Nagpur and Devilal Khaira (34) from a location in Mandya district. The team recovered ₹14.35 lakh from the duo and had them remanded in judicial custody.
