Members of the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, began their indefinite boycott of outpatient department (OP) duties on Monday (February 2) as part of the State-wide agitation.
The doctors staged a demonstration outside the Institute of Maternal and Child Health wing of the hospital and later took out a protest march. Members of the students’ union of the medical college also took out a separate march expressing solidarity with the doctors. KGMCTA medical college unit president Abdul Basith, immediate past State secretary T. Gopakumar, and senior KGMCTA functionaries Mohandas Nair and Tom Wilson addressed the gathering. The KGMCTA’s demands include rectification of pay revision anomalies, payment of salary revision arrears pending since 2016, and appointment of more doctors.
Meanwhile, almost all the senior doctors stayed off from the OP duty as part of the strike. The number of those seeking OP treatment saw a decline because of the strike. The medical college authorities had deployed senior resident doctors, postgraduate medical students, and house surgeons for OP duty. However, it is learnt that the OP consultation got delayed for a while.
