Residents of Fatima Nagar who laid siege to Virudhunagar municipal office protesting against mixing of sewage with drinking water in Virudhunagar.

A section of residents of Fatima Nagar in Virudhunagar town laid a siege to Virudhunagar municipal office on Tuesday protesting against mixing of sewage of drinking water.
The protesters condmened the officials for their lackadaisical attitude by not attending to this issue despite having complained to them two weeks back.
Fatima Nagar which has around 500 houses has witnessed repeated incidents of underground sewage getting chocked for over two weeks. This has eventually led to sewage mixing with drinking water.
Besides, the sewage had also flowed into the houses located in low-lying areas. The residents also complained that door-to-door collection of garbage was not done properly leaving piling up of garbage in the streets. Angered over the inaction of the officials, the residents, including women, thronged the municipal office.
Municipal officials held talks with the protesters and promised to take prompt action by Wednesday following which the agitators dispersed.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) functionaries L. Murugan, M. Jayabharath, and the party Virudhunagar municipal councillors K. Jayakumar, were among those who took part in the protest.
