The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to include 28 Other Backward Classes (OBC) on the list of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) in the State.

This follows a recommendation from the Kerala State Commission for Backward Classes.

Reservation and education benefits for State-run courses in higher education are finalised on the basis of the SEBC list based on the Kumara Pillai Commission Report of 1965.

These 28 communities found a place on the State OBC list, but not on the SEBC one and could not get reservation benefits with respect to education.

Once the matter came to its attention, the government sought reports from the Kerala State Commission for Backward Classes. The commission’s recommendation was accepted by the Cabinet, paving the way for students from these 28 communities to get benefits available in the higher education sector.
