The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed the procurement of 200 electric vehicles to strengthen solid waste management operations in the city.
Civic officials said the existing fleet is not sufficient for door-to-door waste collection, and frequent vehicle breakdowns and delays in repairs have affected operations, leading to interruptions in garbage collection and accumulation of waste on streets in some areas.
The proposed procurement will be taken up under the Swachh Bharat Mission, through which the Union government provides financial assistance for solid waste management. Funds available under the scheme will be utilised for the purchase of the vehicles. Based on a zone-wise assessment of requirements, the Corporation has submitted a proposal to the Tamil Nadu government seeking approval.
The Directorate of Municipal Administration has accorded administrative sanction after examining the proposal. The approval specifies that tenders should be called in accordance with prescribed norms and that the vehicles should be procured within the approved cost.
As per the plan, 63 vehicles will be allocated to the Central zone, 36 to the East zone, 35 to the North zone, and 32 each to the South and West zones. A total allocation of ₹25.73 crore has been made for the procurement.
