Tiruchi Corporation has taken steps to strengthen sanitation infrastructure across the city by constructing new public toilets and renovating damaged and poorly maintained facilities in several wards.

The move comes in response to repeated complaints about the inadequate public sanitation facilities. Several toilets have fallen into disrepair because of lack of maintenance and instances of vandalism.

The Corporation maintains around 400 toilets across the city. In Zone IV, maintenance of a section of these facilities has been outsourced to non-governmental organisations.

To improve amenities, the civic body has proposed upgrade of old toilets by replacing damaged fixtures, repairing plumbing systems, restoring water supply connections, and improving lighting and ventilation.

Under the Corporation’s General Funds 2025-26, renovation and repair work are under way at Swaminathan Street in Ward 37, Arputha Nagar in Ward 16, Vasantha Nagar in Ward 3, Ambedkar Nagar in Ward 4, Kannimar Thoppu in Ward 5, Thimmaraya Samuthiram Colony in Ward 6 and Venus Street in Ward 13 at a cost of ₹35.10 lakh.

Meanwhile, new toilets are to be built at a total cost of ₹1.45 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 2025-26. New community toilets will be constructed near the health centre in Ward 25 at ₹21 lakh, at Pakkali Street in Ward 51 at ₹15 lakh, and on Sathanur Main Road in Ward 63 at ₹25 lakh.

Demolition and reconstruction of public toilets will be carried out at Malligaipuram Main Road in Ward 32 and Eda Street in Ward 33 at a cost of ₹27.20 lakh each, providing eight seats each for men and women and 10 urinals, and Pensioner Street in Ward 27 at ₹30 lakh with 10 seats each for men and women.

Tenders for the proposed work had been awarded with construction likely to commence soon, an official said.
