A District Sessions Court in Mayiladuthurai on Tuesday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment in connection with a murder committed in 2022 following a dispute over land.
According to prosecution, there was longstanding enmity between the families of Chithiran ,62, of Raman Kottagam in Killiyur, under Sembanarkoil police limits, and Pichaikannu over a land-related issue. On March 29, 2022, members of Pichaikannu’s family allegedly abused and attacked Chithiran with a wooden log during an altercation. Chithiran sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.
Based on a complaint lodged by Anjammal 58, wife of the deceased, Sembanarkoil police registered a murder case against Pichaikannu 62, Balamurugan 40, Jayalakshmi 55, Priya 28, and Kaliyammal, 35.
After investigation, then Inspector Selvi arrested the accused and filed a charge sheet before the court.
District Sessions Judge L. S. Sathiyamurthy, who heard the case, found Pichaikannu and Balamurugan guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The other accused were acquitted.
