The Coimbatore Corporation plans to develop Miyawaki forests and native tree plantations in 100 parks under its Climate Budget 2026-27, aimed at enhancing urban greenery and addressing climate challenges. Detailed project reports have been prepared, with an estimated cost of ā¹120 crore.
The Budget also includes restoration of lakes and wells, with ā¹37.84 crore earmarked for Singanallur and Sengulam lakes and ā¹8.36 crore for renovating 836 traditional open wells. Urban greening and biodiversity projects have been allocated a total of ā¹122.50 crore.
Other initiatives include rooftop gardens to reduce building heat and support food security, with a budget of ā¹2.50 crore. Climate mitigation measures such as rainwater harvesting and cool roofs have also been planned. By the end of 2026, municipal buildings are expected to achieve 100% rainwater harvesting (ā¹5 crore), and reflective coatings under the Cool Roof scheme will reduce interior heat by 2ā5°C (ā¹2.50 crore).
A senior corporation official said a 16-member City Climate Action Cell (CCAC) was set up last year to coordinate climate action across the city. The cell will plan, integrate, and monitor city-wide initiatives in line with State government guidelines and collaborate with other line departments to implement projects at the municipal level.
āThis is only the first step. Further planning will focus on reducing emissions, controlling heat, and addressing urban pollution. The city also plans to use electricity generated from floating solar panels at Ukkadam Lake to run the STPs at Singanallur Lake,ā the official said.
