Geothermal energy holds significant promise as a reliable base‑load renewable resource and will play a vital role in India’s transition to sustainable, low‑carbon energy solutions, said CSIR-NGRI director Suresh Kumar on Monday.

Speaking at the inauguration of the six‑day training programme titled ’Geosciences for Geothermal Energy Exploration (G2E2)’, being held from February 23-28 at the institute, he said the course aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and industry needs by enhancing employable skills. Participants from institutions across the country have joined the programme to strengthen their expertise in the geothermal energy sector.

Former Deputy Director General of the Geological Survey of India, P. B. Sarolkar highlighted India’s considerable geothermal potential, especially in tectonically active regions. He emphasised the need for systematic exploration strategies, advanced geophysical imaging, hydrogeochemical characterisation and integrated geological modelling to harness these resources effectively.

Programme coordinator Labani Ray said the course offers interdisciplinary training in heat‑flow studies, hydrogeochemistry, and various geophysical methods, including gravity, magnetic, resistivity (ERT, EVRI), magnetotellurics and seismic techniques, which are critical for geothermal energy exploration.

The programme aims to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required for comprehensive geothermal resource assessment. Skill Initiative programme coordinators A. R. Bansal and K. Rama Mohan were also present, a press release said.
