The State is planning to request Maharashtra to release additional water from its dams into the Krishna river course, as leakage in the Hippargi dam in Bagalkot district has led to a loss of around two tmcft of water, Minister Satish Jarkiholi said here on Friday.
He told reporters that due to damage to the 22nd crest gate of the Hippargi dam near Jamkhandi, two tmcft to three tmcft of water has been lost in the last few months.
“The damage has been repaired but the loss has reduced the quantity of impounded water. We want to request Maharashtra to release additional water from its reservoirs,” the Minister said.
He told officers to prepare for water scarcity in the summer months. They should ensure that no village, hamlet, town or city or habitation suffers from drinking water scarcity. He said that no urban or rural local body is supplying water to any village or habitation by tankers.
Tahsildars have been instructed to provide tanker water to all places that face scarcity. In case, there are no tankers available, the local gram panchayat has been authorised to buy them, the Minister said.
He asked Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan and ZP CEO Rahul Shindhe to monitor the situation closely.
