Tamil Nadu Elementary School Teachers’ Federation (TNESTF) has urged the District Collector and District Election Officer K.J. Praveen Kumar to redress the logistical grievances faced by polling officials.
As preparations for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections are apace, P. Srinivasan, district secretary of TNESTF, through a letter, highlighted two concerns – the financial burden of transit and the lack of basic amenities during the 12-hour polling shift.
“Under the current schedule, election training sessions are slated for April 2, 11, 20, and 22. With many teachers and officials using their private four-wheelers to reach the designated training centres and remote polling booths, the toll charges are out-of-pocket expenses for those on government duty,” he added.
He said the federation had requested a complete waiver of toll gate fees for all officials performing election-related works. This exemption is sought not only for the four training dates but also for the primary election day on April 23, 2026, including the return journey after conclusion of the election process.
The union also raised concerns regarding the physical well-being of the staff.
“On election day, polling officers are expected to be at their stations before dawn and remain until the final ballot is cast and the machines are sealed, a process that frequently exceeds 12 hours,” the petition noted.
“Working continuously for over 12 hours without any facilities for food is a significant challenge,” the union said.
Mr. Srinivasan said that the TNESTF had urged the District Election Officer to implement a structured, brief time allocation for breakfast and lunch.
The union emphasised that providing a suitable and appropriate time for meals was essential for maintaining the efficiency and health of the polling personnel.
