A team of doctors at the SRM Global Hospitals performed dual surgery on a pregnant woman and delivered the baby, saving the mother from permanent paralysis.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Yogesh Kumar, Senior Consultant (Spine Care) of the SRM Global hospitals, said the 32-week pregnant patient, who had multiple health complications, had developed a severe spinal condition. The condition, diagnosed as Cauda Equina Syndrome, left her unable to walk and resulted in a loss of bowel and bladder control. The medical team first delivered the baby safely through an emergency Caesarean section, and followed it up immediately with a complex spine surgery to relieve critical nerve compression and prevent permanent paralysis. Post-surgery, the mother regained her ability to walk.
