Road congestion
Several busy roads and junctions in Madurai are in a damaged state, causing hardship to motorists and pedestrians.
The four-road junction near Sabari Hotel connecting Town Hall Road and the Crime Branch office road, as well as the approach to Thalavai Street from East Avani Moola Street, require urgent repairs.
Traffic congestion is further aggravated by garbage collection vehicles operating during peak hours and garbage trolleys being left on roadsides. In addition, autorickshaws and share autos are often parked indiscriminately or stop abruptly in the middle of roads to pick up passengers.
Unsafe practices such as multiple pillion riders on two-wheelers are also common on busy roads. Bottlenecks near Periyar bus stand and the flyover stretch towards Tirupparankundram road need better traffic regulation.
The civic and traffic authorities should jointly address these issues to improve road safety and traffic flow in the city.

Parking regulation
I recently parked my car at the newly constructed parking shed near the western entrance of Madurai Railway Station and was charged ₹150 for 24 hours. However, there was no display board indicating the approved parking tariff.
On enquiry, the staff stated that there was no practice of displaying such details. The absence of tariff boards causes confusion among vehicle users and lacks transparency.
The railway authorities of Madurai Division should ensure that parking charges are clearly displayed at the facility for the convenience of the public.

Damaged roads
The extension areas of Villapuram, including Meenakshi Nagar and Ganapathy Nagar, have become densely populated. Recent rains have left many roads and streets in a damaged condition, with potholes and breaches causing hardship to residents and motorists.
The poor road condition has led to traffic congestion and accidents, while stagnant rainwater mixed with sewage emits foul smell and creates unhygienic surroundings. Accumulation of garbage and inadequate sanitation have also contributed to mosquito breeding in the area.
The authorities concerned should take immediate steps to repair the roads, clear stagnant water and improve sanitation facilities in the locality.

Unsafe roads
Motorists find it difficult to cross the intersection at Tirunagar Third Stop on the Thirupparankundram Road in Madurai. The junction connects the Thirumangalam–Madurai National Highway with roads leading to Amaithi Solai Nagar and interior parts of Tirunagar, resulting in heavy vehicular movement.
Several potholes and pits at the intersection pose a safety risk, especially when motorists attempt to avoid them while crossing the junction.
The speed breaker that earlier existed near the bus stop was reportedly removed during recent relaying works, increasing the chances of accidents.
The authorities concerned should repair the damaged stretch and install speed breakers near the bus stops on both sides to ensure safer movement for road users.
