After receiving a fruit-tree sapling, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi planted and watered it at Kadri Park in Mangaluru on Monday in the name of his late mother, V. Gnanalekshmi Amma.
Mr. Gopi’s gesture was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to plant a sapling in the name of one’s mother, under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign.
Apart from Mr. Gopi, MP for Dakshina Kannada Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MLA for Mangaluru City South D. Vedavyas Kamath and chief of Ramakrishna Mutt, Mangaluru, Swami Jitakamananda also planted a sapling each in the name of their mothers.
Speaking at the park, during the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) Swachhata Campaign, Mr. Gopi recalled the Prime Minister’s call. Urging people to plant saplings in the name of their mothers, he said it was necessary to increase green cover and prevent global warming. He then invited students and Swachha Mangaluru Abhiyan volunteers on stage, presented them with saplings, and asked them to mention their mothers’ names. He also presented them with jute bags prepared by MRPL.
Mr. Gopi administered the Swachhata Pledge in English. He then joined Capt. Brijesh Chowta and Swami Jitakamananda in sweeping a section of the walkway in the park.
