Students of M.A. Tamil programme at Kalaignar Karunanidhi Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai are facing a quandary over their final results. For about 45 of them, the marks for the Extension Activities paper have not been added to their final result, leaving them short of requisite credits for earning the master’s degree.
As a result, although the results for the semester exam held in April/May 2026 were declared on July 10, the consolidated mark sheet for the students or the provisional degree certificate will not be generated, sources at the institution said.
Credit requirement
Similar to all other subjects, Extension Activities too have internal and external assessments. The Result Gally Sheet for the April/May 2026 clearly showed that none of the students in the department were given marks for the activity. This would mean that the students would fall short of the required 95 credits that they need to accumulate for earning a master’s degree, sources at the college said.
This happened despite the students having completed the activity and submitted the required certificate at the department, said a student on condition of anonymity. When approached, the department pointed fingers at Thiruvalluvar University in Vellore, the parent institution. At the university, the officials have not been responsive, the student added.
‘Unavailable faculty’
College sources said that the internal assessment marks for all subjects, including Extension Activities, were entered in the university portal around mid-April. However, when the window for the external assessment marks was opened at the end of June, the faculty members were not available, and the marks could not be entered. College sources said that the marks list for Extension Activities and a letter would be sent to the Controller of Examinations on Wednesday to be included in the portal.
Extension Activities (Subject Code 23PEA40) comes under skill enhancement category and carries one credit. Students are expected to go out of campus and find an engagement relevant to their field of study (a library, for example), work for around a week, and return with a certificate. It was introduced in 2023 as per Choice Based Credit System rules.
