An eight-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on her way back from school at the remote village of Denkanikottai on Wednesday. According to police, the child was waylaid by an unidentified person, taken into the nearby forest and sexually assaulted.
District Collector C. Dinesh Kumar told The Hindu that the survivor informed her family of the crime, and a relative made a call to the Child Helpline (1098). “We immediately sent a team, and the child was brought to Denkanikottai Primary Health Centre by an 108 ambulance on Wednesday night. The child was shifted to government medical college hospital on Thursday morning,” Mr. Dinesh Kumar said.
Superintendent of Police G.S. Anitha visited the crime scene on Thursday. Three teams have been formed, and an investigation is under way. “We will issue a press note, once the inquiry is completed,” Ms. Anitha said.
