A 17-year-old girl, Muvedha, daughter of Nagarajan, accompanied by her mother Pandeeswari, appealed to District Collector Sivaguru Prabhakaran for a fresh statement of marks for her Plus Two, which was gutted in a fire at her dwelling on Monday.
In a petition submitted to the Collector at the weekly grievance redress meeting at the Ramanathapuram Collectorate, she said an AIADMK functionary had allegedly set fire to her dwelling on July 6, claiming that it was his land. Denying the claim, she had told him that it was government poramboke land.
However, he allegedly set fire to the dwelling and they escaped unhurt. The Thondi police have registered a case and an investigation is under way.
Stating that her mark statement was destroyed in the fire, she pointed out to the Collector that she was unable to join any college as the original was lost in the fire.
Assuring that the student would get a duplicate statement, the Collector ordered the revenue officials to conduct an inquiry into her claim.
Along with Pandeeswari, 15 others from Thiruvadanai block in M.V. Gandhi Nagar submitted petitions stating that their dwellings were also damaged in the fire. They sought house-site pattas. The officials said they would conduct an inspection soon.
