Madurai urban district unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded to ensure safety of the people by maintaining law and order.

Its district committee meeting, led by party executive committee member, M. Balasubramaniam, held on Monday pointed out that eight murders have been reported in the city in 11 days between July 30 and August 9.

This has created panic among the residents. The party has expressed its concern over the murders in a short span of time, a statement said.

The primary duty of the police is not to take action after crimes are committed but to take pre-emptive steps to prevent them. Officials in the top echelons in police department should study this trend immediately, the statement said.

The availability of banned psychotrophic drugs, including ganja, and increasing trend of youths becoming addicted to them were the breeding ground for increasing violence and criminal activities.

The police should take stringent and continuous action to prevent sale and smuggling of drugs, the party committee said.

The party pointed out that the intelligence department that has vital role in anticipating such criminal incidents in advance and preventing them.

The police officials should examine that some of the police personnel were working in the same position for several years and hence the required administrative changes should be brought about.

The police should step up its patrolling duty in the areas prone for crime. Pre-emptive actions were required to prevent revenge activities, clashes among gangs and free availability of drugs.

“It is the duty of the Government to create a safe ambience for the people in Madurai to lead a fearless life. Hence, the State government and police department should study law and order situation, revamp the intelligence department and prevent crimes in the city,” the statement said.

City bus services that were suspended in 41 routes should be resumed to mitigate the sufferings of the students of schools and colleges, workers and common man, the party said.

The police should give up its atrocious action without any prior notice against roadside vendors, who were making their livelihood by setting up their business at the spots permitted by Madurai Corporation. Besides protecting their livelihood, their legal rights should be ensured.

Madurai Corporation should conduct the vending committee election without delay and form zone-wise teams comprising Corporation officials and roadside vendors to help the vendors continue with their business, the statement said.

State executive committee member, Madhukkur Ramalingam, district secretary, M. Ganesan, and members of district executive committee and district committee, participated in the meeting.
