Mechanised boats operating from Thoothukudi Fishing Harbour abstained from fishing on Tuesday after a gale lashed the coastal areas.
After a warning from the Indian Meteorological Department that strong winds with a velocity of around 60 km would lash the coastal areas of Thoothukudi, the Department of Fisheries shared the information with owners of mechanised boats on Monday.
Most of the boats that had ventured into the sea for fishing on Monday morning returned to the harbour shortly after noon instead of the usual 9 p.m. due to strong winds. As the turbulent weather continued on Tuesday, the Fisheries Department urged the boat owners not to go for fishing. Hence, all 272 boats remained berthed in the fishing harbour.
“Since IMD has warmed of strong winds in the region till August 21, fishing operations should be suspended until further orders,” the department officials said.
