The enforcement wing of the Ernakulam Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement) imposed a total penalty of ₹6.04 lakh on trucks for overloading as part of a surprise night check held on September 7.
Notices were issued to 20 such vehicles by the four special squads that carried out inspections at Muvattupuzha, Koothattukulam, Perumbavoor, and Angamaly. The squads led by Biju Issac, Enforcement RTO, found other violations including non-payment of vehicle tax, invalid permits, and drivers without licence.
Penalty was imposed on erring vehicles for use of air horns, illegal modification, carrying dangerously protruding goods, and display of advertisements in violation of rules, according to a communication.
The Motor Vehicles department (MVD) said the inspections would continue in the coming days. Stringent action would be taken against those who flouted rules, it said.
