Local bodies in Tiruppur instructed to install electronic measurement devices to optimise water utility in shortage situation

Local bodies in Tiruppur district have been instructed to install electronic water flow monitoring devices for accurately measurement of the daily drinking water supply in the Tiruppur City Corporation, Municipalities, Town Panchayats, and Village Panchayats.

Officials have been tasked with the responsibility of monitoring water distributed by Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board through sumps and to maintain records of the volume supplied to overhead tanks in panchayats and hamlets.

Representatives of the Tiruppur Corporation encompassing 60 wards, six municipalities, 15 town panchayats, and 13 panchayat unions discussed water conservation measures with officials of TWAD Board at a meeting convened by District Collector Manish Narnaware on Wednesday.

The Collector also took stock of the measures taken to maintain water supply in the 265 Village Panchayats, and called upon officials to undertake field inspections to ensure consistency in water supply, in the wake of complaints from residents in rural parts.

Details of redressal of public grievance pertaining to water supply must be furnished to the district administration, the Collector said, instructing subordinate officials to rectify damage to water pipelines without delay.

The substantial shortage in accrual from the southwest monsoon has been reflected in the storage position in Amaravathi and Thirumoorthy Dams.

On Thursday morning, the water level in Amaravathy Dam stood at 40.03 feet against the maximum of 90 feet. On the same day last year, the reservoir was brimming at 88.26 feet. The storage was 736 mcft compared to 3890 mcft on the same day last year.

Likewise, in Thirumoorthy Dam, the level stood at 32.46 feet on Thursday against the maximum of 60 feet. On the same day last year, the level was 52.2 feet.

The storage on Thursday was 718 mcft compared to 1,425 mcft on the same day last year.
