A total of 11.85 tonnes of plastic items seized during inspections by the Coimbatore Corporation and stored at its plastic storage facility in R.S. Puram were sent to the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at Ondipudur on Saturday.
A Corporation official said that Tamil Nadu has prohibited 33 categories of single-use plastic items, including plastic carry bags, cups, straws and spoons. The plastic items were seized during regular inspections of commercial establishments across the city to enforce the ban.
The plastic items sent to the MRF would be shredded and processed for use in road-laying works and other purposes, the official said.
The Corporation was conducting field inspections and awareness campaigns across its 100 wards to check the use of banned single-use plastic items. Plastic found during the inspections in violation of the ban was seized and stored at designated facilities before being sent for processing, the official said.
