Doctors at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi have successfully performed an advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedure on a 15-year-old girl diagnosed with Peutz–Jeghers syndrome (PJS), removing five large polyps from the second part of her duodenum in a single session.
According to a press statement, the girl had multiple large polyps in the duodenum. Considering their size and number, doctors decided to undertake endoscopic intervention to prevent potential complications associated with large small-bowel polyps.
Five sizeable duodenal polyps were resected during the procedure. The intervention was completed without any reported procedural complications.
The minimally invasive procedure was performed by surgeons from the Department of Medical and Interventional Gastroenterology. The doctors said that removing the polyps would help reduce the risk of future complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction and intussusception.
Peutz–Jeghers syndrome is a rare inherited genetic disorder characterised by the development of polyps throughout the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the small intestine, the note said.
