As many Ganesh idol immersions are expected to take place on a large scale on Wednesday, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has made special arrangements at immersion points across the city.
The VMC has deployed additional sanitation staff at all immersion points to segregate and collect puja waste. Twelve sanitation workers have been stationed at Prakasam Barrage to segregate and collect flowers, puja materials and other waste generated during the immersion process.
In a statement on Tuesday (September 15), VMC Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M. said similar arrangements had been made at Punnami Ghat and Bhavani Ghat, with 10 sanitation workers deployed at each location.
Flying squads are also visiting various immersion points across the city to monitor the management of puja waste. So far, approximately 15,000 kg of puja waste has been collected, he said.
Barricades have been installed near the city’s canals, while people are being educated and encouraged not to dispose of puja waste in canals or other water bodies. Waste that accidentally enters the canals is also being removed regularly with the help of truck-mounted machines, Mr. Dhyanachandra said.
The floral waste collected is being used to manufacture products such as incense sticks, while other puja waste is being scientifically processed and used to produce organic manure, he said.
Mr. Dhyanachandra appealed to the public to refrain from disposing of puja waste in canals and water bodies and instead hand it over to the personnel deployed by the corporation.
