Energy Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar on Tuesday said the reduction in wind energy and an extended summer were the reasons for the prevailing power shortage in the State.
Stating that these factors had led to load shedding in some parts of the State, he added that the problem had been overcome by purchasing more than 2,000 MW of power from the open market.
Addressing a press meet in Chennai, Mr. Nirmal Kumar said that normally, during this time of the year, the energy demand would be around 16,000 MW. However, due to hot weather in the city and across the State, the peak demand had increased to around 19,000 MW. The reduction in generation of wind energy had resulted in an electricity deficit of over 3,000 MW. Steps were being taken to purchase additional power from the open market to bridge the shortage, he added.
The press meet comes in the wake of protests by residents in some parts of the State after experiencing power disruption for three to four hours last week. The Minister said the situation was being monitored by senior officials, and steps were taken to rectify any faults.
