Over 250 idols of Lord Vinayaka were taken out in a procession along the four Masi streets and immersed in the Vaigai river on Tuesday.

The idols of Lord Vinayaka were taken out in a procession by the workers of Hindu Munnani, Hindu Mahasabha and the members of the public.

The procession was taken out along East Masi Street, Vilakkuthoon, South Masi Street, West Masi Street, North Masi Street, Simmakkal and then taken to the Vaigai river for immersion.

An adequate number of police personnel was deployed along with the idols and along the procession route on the four Masi streets.

The idol procession was taken out in batches. The first and the second batches of the procession were taken out in the afternoon at around 1 p.m. and 1.30 p.m., while another procession was taken out in the evening at around 5.50 p.m.. Men, women and children participated in the procession in large numbers.

Earlier, Madurai district administration issued guidelines on the permissible materials for making Lord Vinayaka idols for the immersion ceremony in connection with the Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations. The authorities had instructed that the Lord Vinayaka idols should be immersed only at places notified for the purpose.
