LDF to launch protest over dysfunctional streetlights in Kochi Corporation limits

The Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) is set to launch a protest against what it accused as the continuing neglect of the Kochi Corporation in ensuring the functioning of streetlights, while allowing companies entrusted with their operation and maintenance to take advantage of advertisements.

At the last meeting of the Corporation council held on September 10, the LDF had raised the matter, specifically pointing out streetlights remaining shut on Venduruthy Bridge, Alexander Parambithara Bridge, parts of the Kundannoor Bridge within Corporation limits, and the M.G. Road. Responding to the grievances, Mayor V.K. Minimol directed Corporation officials to remove advertisement boards from streetlights that remain non-operational with immediate effect.

V.A. Sreejith, the LDF parliamentary party leader, said that no action has been initiated yet, as advertisement boards continue to be mounted on dysfunctional streetlights. “We had raised the matter in the Corporation council meeting held on August 13 as well, and the Mayor had promised to take corrective action. However, even after a month, nothing has happened on the ground. We will launch a protest against the continuing neglect towards a critical issue raised by the Opposition time and again,” he said.

Brahmapuram focus now: Mayor

Ms. Minimol said that the entire Corporation machinery remains preoccupied with affairs at Brahmapuram ahead of a visit by three High Court judges to review the operations there, a regular exercise since the major fire that broke out in tonnes of plastic waste at Brahmapuram in 2023. “We will turn our attention to the streetlight issues once the visit is over. Advertisement boards on dysfunctional streetlights will be immediately removed thereafter,” she said.

The Corporation is also set to convene a joint meeting with Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) and the company entrusted with the operation and maintenance of street lights handed over to them by CSML.

Councillors across the political divide alleged that repeated complaints regarding streetlights remain unresolved by the contractor concerned, who, they said, raised the issue of pending bills.

“We have cleared bills worth ₹24 lakh, and pending dues will be settled as and when bills are presented. At the same time, we cannot clear the entire dues when persistent complaints about maintenance continue,” Ms. Minimol said.
