A 33-year old man was hacked to death near Keezha Devanallur in the district late on Saturday.
Police identified the deceased as Ramesh Ram, a resident of Keezha Devanallur. He was allegedly called to Manimuthar canal near Keezha Devanallur over the phone. During an altercation, he was allegedly attacked with a sickle by a group of people and died on the spot.
Kalakkad police sent the body to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.
A case was registered at Kalakkad police station. Police arrested Sriram Boopathi, 18, of Kallidaikurichi in connection with the incident. Further investigation is under way.
A senior police official said around five members were involved in the murder and search was under way to nab them. Both the victim and assailants belonged to the same community.
