The Coimbatore district unit of the Anti-Corruption Movement has urged Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to implement a series of measures to strengthen the State’s anti-corruption mechanisms and ensure greater accountability in the administration.
In a representation, the organisation referred to the Chief Minister’s stated commitment to eradicate corruption and said that recurring arrests of officials allegedly accepting bribes showed the need for systemic reforms.
The organisation called for stringent action against officials found to be habitually involved in corrupt practices, including invoking Article 311(2)(b) of the Constitution, wherever warranted, to remove such officials from service.
It also sought greater accountability of departmental heads and supervisory officers for corrupt practices occurring under their jurisdiction. It suggested that Heads of Departments submit periodic vigilance and transparency certificates and that the reports be made available in the public domain.
The organisation urged the government to ensure compliance with Madras High Court directions concerning monitoring committees headed by District Collectors to identify and act against unauthorised constructions.
It also sought a time-bound Statewide drive to remove encroachments from water bodies and restore such lands to revenue records, besides fixing responsibility on officials who allegedly facilitated illegal encroachments or pattas.
On revenue leakage in the mining and minerals sector, the organisation proposed automated digital weighbridges, GPS tracking of mineral transit passes and stricter audits to curb illegal quarrying and transportation.
It further urged the government to strengthen the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, saying that it should be held accountable for promptly inquiring into allegations of corruption and taking cases to their logical conclusion.
