The CPI(M) has urged Dindigul Corporation to repair pothole-ridden roads in the Corporation limits.
A. Arabu Mohamed, Secretary of CPI(M) Dindigul City Committee, said that due to heavy rains in the past few days, many roads within the Corporation limits had developed potholes, causing hardship to vehicle users leading to accidents.
He said the roads should be repaired and new tar roads should be laid. He pointed out that the North Ratha Street road from the Government Hospital via Gopal Samudram taxi stand to Arasamaram had been severely damaged and was riddled with potholes.
There were blockages in the drainage in key areas of the city, such as near Nagal Nagar flyover and Vellai Vinayagar Temple, leading to rainwater stagnating on the streets. The public were affected as a result, he said.
He urged the Corporation to deploy adequate manpower to clear the blockages. He also urged the authorities to remove garbage that had accumulated across the city on war-footing.
Meanwhile, residents of Rajakkapatti in Chettinayakanpatti submitted a petition to the Dindigul Collector urging authorities to provide basic amenities such as proper drainage in the streets. They said that during the rains, rainwater was getting mixed with the sewage and flooded the houses.
Due to the absence of proper drainage facilities in Rajakkapatti, over 100 families were facing severe hardship, they said and urged the authorities to take immediate steps to provide drainage facilities in the area.
