Heavy rain lashes Salem and Namakkal districts

Heavy rain lashed Salem and Namakkal districts, with Salem logging a 588.80 mm of rainfall and Namakkal 418.20 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours that ended at 6 a.m. on Monday (September 21).

On Sunday evening, rain began pounding parts of Salem district. Heavy rain lashed rural areas such as Sankari and Vazhapadi as well as Salem City at midnight. In the early hours of Monday, rain continued in the district.

Rainwater stagnated on the roads in Salem City, and water entered houses in low-lying areas of Pachapatti and Johnsonpet. Likewise, rainwater entered houses in Uthamasolapuram and in Samathuvapuram at Neikkarapatti.

With the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium waterlogged, people were not allowed in for morning walk, and the gate was closed.

In Sankari municipality, rainwater entered houses in ward two. On Monday, municipality workers removed the water using pumps. Power supply was disrupted in many areas in Sankari.

Around midnight, heavy rain pounded Sankari in Salem district as well as Rasipuram and Paramathi Velur in Namakkal district. Vehicles on the Salem-Madurai National Highway struggled to ply on the road, with most halting on the roadside for a few hours until the rain stopped.

Over the past 24 hours that ended at 6 a.m. on Monday, 588.80 mm of rainfall registered in Salem district, including 123.4 mm in Sankari, 75.1 mm in Salem, 61.1 mm in Vazhapadi, 50.2 mm in Danishpet, 50 mm in Puludikkuttai, 47 mm in Yercaud, 46 mm in Kariyakovil, 24.8 mm in Mettur, 24 mm in Yethapur, 22 mm in Gangavalli, 19 mm in Nathakarai, 16 mm in Thammampatti, 10.8 mm in Attur, 8.4 mm in Edappadi, 7 mm in Veeraganoor, and 4 mm in Omalur.

Namakkal district registered 418.20 mm of rainfall, including 90 mm in Rasipuram, 65 mm in Paramathi Velur, 61.60 mm in Mangalapuram, 42 mm in Puduchatram, 35 mm in Kollihills Semmedu, 27.40 mm in Senthamangalam, 27 mm in Mohanur, 21.20 mm in Tiruchengode, 20 mm in Kumarapalayam, 14 mm in Namakkal, 13 mm in Collectorate, and 2 mm in Erumapatti.
