The Left Democratic Front (LDF) Kozhikode district committee on Tuesday (September 22) took out a march to the Government Medical College here in protest against the decision to exclude political party representatives from the hospital development society (HDS).
Opening the protest, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] district secretary M. Mehboob alleged that the attempt was to make the HDS “a sub-committee of the United Democratic Front”. He claimed that the existing democratic structure of the HDS was being destroyed.
Mr. Mehboob said that all this was happening at a time when the patients were suffering because of shortage of medicines and doctors and special schemes for those belonging to poor families. The CPI(M) leader claimed that the burden of treatment costs was being forcefully transferred to patients. Those close to the ruling party were also trying to gain kick-backs through HDS-controlled temporary appointments in the hospital, he added.
Communist Party of India district secretary P. Gavas, LDF convener Mukkom Mohammed, and other LDF leaders were present.
