The Coimbatore Unit of CB CID police on Tuesday arrested Saravanan Karuppasamy, an advocate against whom a Non-Bailable Warrant issued by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of the District Court was pending, and had him remanded in judicial custody.
A police team arrested the advocate, who is said to be a Member of Supreme Court Bar Association, as he had failed to appear in the CJM Court for hearings, for trial in alleged cheating cases booked in 2010, even after his appeal in the Madras High Court for recall of NBW dispense with appearance in the Trial Court was dismissed last month.
The High Court order stated that the petitioner is not entitled to seek relief without submitting himself to the Trial Court.
Saravanan Karuppasamy had, as petitioner in the High Court, had represented himself as a lawyer in Supreme Court; Chairman, Hindu People Padhukapu Padai; and Chairman Cum Editor-In-Chief, World Human Rights Commission and Rescue Centre.
According to the prosecution, Saravanan Karuppasamy had, claiming to be a rapporteur of World Human Rights Commission, conducted camps in Coimbatore and collected huge amounts of money from gullible people by promising to fulfil their grievances, during 2008-10. The cheating cases were registered against him, based on the complaints lodged by the aggrieved parties during 2010.
As Saravanan Karuppasamy kept skipping the hearing even after the High Court directive, the Trial Court had, last month, issued a Non-Bailable Warrant.
The Organised Crime Unit of CB CID, Coimbatore, arrested Saravanan Karuppasamy, and produced him in the CJM Court.
The Judge K. Sivakumar dismissed Saravanan Karuppasamy’s bail plea and ordered his judicial remand till September 29.
