Tamil Nadu CM Vijay conducts surprise inspection at TNDPCL headquarters

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay conducted a surprise inspection at the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) headquarters, located in Chennai, to review the various aspects of power generation, distribution, and grid management, on Wednesday (September 23, 2026). 

Mr. Vijay, who was accompanied by Energy Resources Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar during the review, enquired about the current electricity demand and generation, the power derived from renewable and non-renewable energy sources, the gap between electricity demand and generation capacity, and the growth in electricity demand due to the prolonged summer months. 

Officials of TNDPCL explained to the Chief Minister the impact of the spike in electricity demand across the State, the constraints in procuring additional electricity from the power exchange to fill the demand-supply gap, the challenges in coal supply, the high cost of gas-based power generation, and the unexpected generation disruptions at the central power stations.

The officials also explained the measures being undertaken across the State to meet the increasing electricity demand by strengthening the power distribution infrastructure and installing additional transformers and new power lines. They also gave a presentation on the overloaded networks, the replacement of aging transformers and equipment, and the bolstering of field operations for the speedy rectification of any power supply issues. 

Later, the Chief Minister inspected the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC), which is the nerve centre for grid management, to enquire about the tasks of managing the power load in real time by monitoring electricity generation, procurement, demand, and distribution across the State. He also visited the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Control Centre, which functions as the nerve centre for the Chennai distribution, and interacted with the officials on the real-time monitoring of the power distribution network in the city. 

After completing his inspection of SLDC and SCADA, Mr. Vijay inspected ‘Minnagam,’ the round-the-clock consumer service office, established to receive electricity distribution grievances and complaints from the public throughout the State and tp ensure the fast communication of the issues to the officials concerned to get them resolved. 

The Chief Minister, pitching for modern technologies to be utilised for having real-time monitoring of the power situation, stressed that the State must be made self-reliant in the power sector. As part of this, he wanted the officials of TNPDCL to expedite the various power generation projects within the stipulated timelines, enhancing captive power generation, and speed up distribution infrastructure projects to help the consumers in the State get round-the-clock power supply.
