DGP Alok Kumar visits Hassan Prison

The Director General of Police for Prisons and Correctional Services, Alok Kumar, visited the district prison here on Thursday and inspected the prison administration.

The officer, accompanied by Hassan Superintendent of Police Shubhangi and senior officials of the Hassan prison, inspected the barracks and interacted with the inmates. He also tasted the food prepared for the prisoners.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, Mr. Kumar said there was a shortage of space for inmates. Against a sanctioned capacity of 250, as many as 334 inmates were currently lodged there, he said, adding that the department had submitted a proposal to the State government for construction of a new prison.

He said that while there had earlier been complaints of unidentified persons throwing banned items into the prison, no such instances had been reported in recent days. He, however, cautioned that inmates needed to maintain discipline, noting reports of some inmates being involved in fights. The department would shift ten such inmates to the Mysuru prison, he added.

The DGP made it clear that no cellphones were found during the inspection.
